Despite knowing more than we ever have about human health, nutrition and food science, many U.S. public schools still manage to provide their K-12 students with unhealthy food that leads to a poor diet. Many meals are pushing the scales with heavy doses of sugar, cholesterol and dangerous trans fat.
Many schools continue to promote poor health with unhealthy meal options. This results in forcing school children into bad nutritional habits at an early age, when instead they should be learning about improving their health. However, there are some schools out there that have managed to change their ways for the better. Many have transitioned to provide low fat options, whole wheat bread, and soups with plenty of protein and nutrients.
Efforts to combat these issues date back to 1946 when National School Lunch Program (NSLP) was first signed into law. The legislation was passed with good intentions but today the program continues with both pros and cons.
The NSPL was passed with the intention of providing guidance to families with low nutritional knowledge. It is also meant to provide affordable food for families who cannot afford it.
Although NSPL was passed with good intentions, the execution has not been the best. Sometimes the food that is provided is very unhealthy and is not of high quality. Children are usually restricted to a predetermined menu and have very few healthy options to choose from.
